When I was a kid I loved the sense of connection that stirred up during the Holidays.
There was a level of kindness that increased within the family as I watched my relatives do nice things like bake a batch of cookies to bring over and visit with my folks for a while sitting in my dad’s big LaZBoy chair and sharing their year’s challenges and accomplishments as we all gathered around to listen with curious enthusiasm.
Sensing that deeper level of connection and kindness was very moving for me. I held onto that throughout the year and grasped it tightly when I witnessed the same relatives expressing intense unkindness, trying to telepathically remind them of what they’re truly capable of being.
Giving, kindness, a smile, a hug, a kind word, graciousness, understanding, compassion.
But it is the “unlovable, difficult, maybe not so clean, or the smartest, and so much more” that is so in need of these gestures. Step out of your comfort zone. All these things have no season. Make it a way of life. Every day I try to step out of my comfort zone. Pretty soon it becomes a way of life! I would like everyone in the “Spirit of the Season” to step out of your comfort zone, every day, until our next Christmas holiday!
